Adelina Patti was born on February 10, 1843, in Madrid. Her mother (a soprano) and father (a tenor) moved their family to New York City while Patti was still young. It was here that Patti made her official operatic debut at the age of sixteen, though she had been singing in public since childhood. She performed for Abraham and Mary Lincoln at age nineteen, singing "Home! Sweet Home!" by John Howard Payne, a song that subsequently became her most famous. She experienced immense success throughout her career and traveled regularly to perform for exorbitant fees. Patti visited New Orleans first in the year 1860 for an extended engagement with the New Orleans opera company shortly after making her debut in New York City. This was her first official contract as a professional singer. She would visit Louisiana several more times throughout her career for highly anticipated and heavily attended concerts before retiring in 1914. Patti died September 27, 1919.
