Interlibrary Loan Overview

How to use LSU Libraries' Interlibrary Loan services

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

ILL is a mediated service which can be utilized to request books and journal articles from other libraries that are not available at LSU. While LSU Libraries offers access to a plethora of information resources, if you need something that the library does not have, it can be borrowed from someplace else, with estimated delivery times of 1-2 weeks for physical items, and 24-48 hours for articles and book chapters!

Oh! And don't be afraid of the word, "Loan," in Interlibrary Loan. ILL is a completely free service.

LSU Faculty and Faculty Emeriti, Staff, LSU and LSU Online Graduate and Undergraduate Students are all eligible to use ILL. No matter what your classification is, the service is available to all LSU affiliated patrons for the same "price"—FREE!

If you are not eligible, contact the interlibrary loan office at a library with which you are affiliated (a public library or another university). Patrons at LSU Law School should use the LSU Law Library's Interlibrary Loan.

ILL can be used to request all kinds of materials, including articles, books, book chapters, CDs and DVDs, microform, music scores, and more.

If you find an article online that would be perfect for your research, but it's blocked by a pay wall—don't pay for it, request access to it using ILL!

Have a book you're interested in reading, but it's not available at the library, and you want to save money? Use ILL to request the book!

Textbooks can be ordered through interlibrary loan, but it is not recommended because few libraries carry them, and they are typically due before the end of the semester. When ordering a textbook you will need all semester, plan to place a request for a second copy a few weeks before the due date of your first copy.

E-books may be requested through Interlibrary Loan but are often unavailable due to publisher restrictions. If unavailable, we will contact you and offer to borrow it in print.

Recently published books may not be immediately available from other libraries. If so, we will offer to hold your request until the item becomes available.

For questions about submitting a large or complex request, email Interlibrary Loan at libilb@lsu.edu.
