Principles of Responsible Use of Metrics
- The Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics (2015)"Research evaluation has become routine and often relies on metrics. But it is increasingly driven by data and not by expert judgement. As a result, the procedures that were designed to increase the quality of research are now threatening to damage the scientific system. To support researchers and managers, five experts led by Diana Hicks, professor in the School of Public Policy at Georgia Institute of Technology, and Paul Wouters, director of CWTS at Leiden University, have proposed 10 principles for the measurement of research performance: the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics published as a comment in Nature."
- The Metric Tide: Review of Metrics in Research Assessment (2015)The metric tide is an independent review of the role of metrics in research assessment and management.
- The Hong Kong Principles for assessing researchers: Fostering research integrity (2020)Essay by David Moher, Lex Bouter, Sabine Kleinert, Paul Glasziou, Mai Har Sham, Virginia Barbour, Anne-Marie Coriat, Nicole Foeger, Ulrich Dirnagl
- Harnessing the Metric Tide (2022)This review was commissioned by the joint UK higher education (HE) funding bodies as part of the Future Research Assessment Programme (FRAP). It revisits the findings of the 2015 review The Metric Tide to take a fresh look at the use of indicators in research management and assessment.
Tools & Resources
- Metrics ToolkitThe Metrics Toolkit was developed to help scholars and evaluators understand and use citations, web metrics, and altmetrics responsibly in the evaluation of research.
The Metrics Toolkit provides evidence-based information about research metrics across disciplines, including how each metric is calculated, where you can find it, and how each should (and should not) be applied. You’ll also find examples of how to use metrics in grant applications, CV, and promotion packages. - DORA's Resource LibraryA collection of materials to facilitate the development of responsible research and researcher assessment policies and practices.
