Atlas of World Landscape Architecture by Landscape architecture is comprised of a wide and multifaceted range of very diverse outdoor space designs - stern or playful, shrill or romantic, straightforward or low key. As their main "building materials" are trees and shrubs, flowers and grass, landscape architecture projects are in a constant state of flux. As opposed to architectural buildings, projects in this sector are therefore never quite 'finished' or completely developed. This compendium is a reference book andsource of inspiration in one, presenting around 350 current projects from around the world. They range from expansive natural and cultivated landscapes, via picturesque front yards and courtyards, spectacular greened facades and roofs, up to innovative outdoor designs that nearly or completely make do without any vegetation. They all share the fact that they constitute and provide ecologically and socially intact living spaces for human beings.
Call Number: SB472 .A763 2014ISBN: 9783037681664Overgrown by A call for landscape architects to leave the office and return to the garden. Addressing one of the most repressed subjects in landscape architecture, this book could only have been written by someone who is both an experienced gardener and a landscape architect. With Overgrown, Julian Raxworthy offers a watershed work in the tradition of Ian McHarg, Anne Spirn, Kevin Lynch, and Gyorgy Kepes. As a discipline, landscape architecture has distanced itself from gardening, and landscape architects take pains to distinguish themselves from gardeners or landscapers. Landscape architects tend to imagine gardens from the office, representing plants with drawings or other simulations, whereas gardeners work in the dirt, in real time, planting, pruning, and maintainting. In Overgrown, Raxworthy calls for the integration of landscape architecture and gardening. Each has something to offer the other: Landscape architecture can design beautiful spaces, and gardening can enhance and deepen the beauty of garden environments over time. Growth, says Raxworthy, is the medium of garden development; landscape architects should leave the office and go into the garden in order to know growth in an organic, nonsimulated way. Raxworthy proposes a new practice for working with plant material that he terms "the viridic" (after "the tectonic" in architecture), from the Latin word for green, with its associations of spring and growth. He builds his argument for the viridic through six generously illustrated case studies of gardens that range from "formal" to "informal" approaches--from a sixteenth-century French Renaissance water garden to a Scottish poet-scientist's "marginal" garden, barely differentiated from nature. Raxworthy argues that landscape architectural practice itself needs to be "gardened," brought back into the field. He offers a "Manifesto for the Viridic" that casts designers and plants as vegetal partners in a renewed practice of landscape gardening.
Call Number: SB472 .R37 2018ISBN: 9780262038539River. Space. Design by Urban riverbanks are attractive locations and highly prized recreational environments. However, they must meet the requirements of flood control, open space design and ecology at the same time, often a challenging task for the designer. This book is the product of extensive research that identified some 60 best-practice examples and subjected them to a comparative analysis. The result is a systematic catalog of effective strategies and innovative design tools that provides readers with an inspiring overview of the broad spectrum of design possibilities for river spaces. Each project is illustrated with photographs taken especially for the book and each design strategy and tool is explained by diagrams. This revised edition introduces ten new case studies chiefly from North America.

This book takes a broad look at strategies and completed projects to provide the reader with a strong understanding of the sustainability challenges being faced by designers today, and potential routes to addressing them. The book covers essential concepts of landscape architecture and environmental sustainability, including: - Ecology, multifunctional landscapes and sensitive intervention- Remediation, cleansing and environmental infrastructure- Social sustainability, design activism and healthy landscapes - Food systems, productive landscapes and transportation- Performance ratings, materials and life cycles Through case studies from around the world and interviews with leading landscape architects and practitioners, this book invites discussion about possible future scenarios, relevant theories and project responses in landscape environmental design. With hundreds of color images throughout the book, and additional study material in the companion website, Joshua Zeunert provides an overview of the multidimensional qualities of landscape sustainability.
Call Number: SB472 .Z48 2017ISBN: 9781472590626Thinking about Landscape Architecture by What is landscape architecture? Is it gardening, or science, or art? In this book, Bruce Sharky provides a complete overview of the discipline to provide those that are new to the subject with the foundations for future study and practice. The many varieties of landscape practice are discussed with an emphasis on the significant contributions that landscape architects have made across the world in daily practice.¿ Written by a leading scholar and practitioner, this book outlines the subject and explores how, from a basis in garden design, it 'leapt over the garden wall' to encapsulate areas such as urban and park design, community and regional planning, habitat restoration, green infrastructure and sustainable design, and site engineering and implementation. Coverage includes: The effects that natural and human factors have upon design, and how the discipline is uniquely placed to address these challenges¿ Examples of contemporary landscape architecture work - from storm water management and walkable cities to well-known projects like the New York High Line and the London Olympic Park¿ Exploration of how art and design, science, horticulture, and construction come together in one subject¿ Thinking about Landscape Architecture is perfect for those wanting to better understand this fascinating subject, and those starting out as landscape architecture students.
Call Number: SB472.45 .S53 2016ISBN: 9781138847170Drawing for Landscape Architecture by Across the design disciplines, drawing by hand has largely become a lost art. With digital tools at their disposal, the majority of designers create spaces while sitting at their computer screens. Attitudes are changing, however: spurred by creative boredom and by a sense of being disconnected from their briefs, today’s designers seek a greater and more immediate connection with their projects. There is no better way to stimulate the imagination than by learning to draw what one sees and imparting spatial ideas by hand. Aimed at landscape- and garden-design professionals, this essential publication reintroduces the importance of learning to “see by hand,” to visualize large-scale design plans and explain them through drawing before using the digital tools that are so crucial to efficient and cost- effective building solutions. This enriched approach makes for better design, happier clients, and the most successful projects.
