Slavery
Overview
The struggle over slavery and its expansion into the West played a central role in American politics before the Civil War. This section covers some of the points of conflict in the lead up to 1860. Some items of note include the papers of John Slidell, a prominent Louisiana politician, and documentation on Southern filibusters, mercenary armies that tried to create slave republics in Latin America during the 1850s. It is worth noting as well that most all of the major collections the library holds during this period will have some reference to the controversies surrounding slavery and the ensuing Civil War. For a guide on materials related to the war itself, see here.
